Steven R. Poole, MD, earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1972. At the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, he completed his pediatric residency in 1975 and an ambulatory pediatrics/ behavior and development fellowship in 1976. Dr. Poole joined the faculty of Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 1977. He is currently Medical Director of The Children’s Hospital Community Pediatrics and Pediatric Locum Tenens Service; and he serves as Vice Chair for Ambulatory and Community Affairs and Co-Section Head of Community Pediatrics and Epidemiology for the Department of Pediatrics.
Dr. Poole's research interests include diagnostic dilemmas, general pediatric consultation, and medical care by telephone.
Dr. Poole is the Founder and Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Telephone Care, which he established in 1997. He is an active member of a wide range of professional organizations and serves on numerous committees within the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also active in many Children’s Hospital committees and boards. He serves as a peer reviewer and editor for many medical journals, and is widely published in both journals and books.
Dr. Poole has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to medical education. He has managed the rural rotation and continuity clinic components of the pediatric residency training program for a number of years; and he now oversees the resident curriculum in community pediatrics as well. He has received numerous teaching and service awards throughout his career, including three “Best Teacher” awards from third-year residents at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.
Dr. Poole has been called on as a visiting professor in several states, including Alaska, and is a frequent presenter at national meetings and symposia. He has received numerous grants for his work. He has obtained grants from six Colorado Foundations to serve as Executive Director of the Colorado Children's Healthcare Access Program, whose mission is to enable private pediatric practice to devote at least 10% of their practice to providing a medical home for low-income children; and he has received a five-year grant to train health care providers in cultural competency and to develop the supports needed to enable all pediatric practices in Colorado to accept Medicaid and CHP+ children.
Dr. Poole is board certified in pediatrics.
