Christopher C. Silliman, MD, PhD, earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, in 1985, and his doctoral degree in Cell Biology from Tulane University Graduate School in 1987. He finished his Pediatric Residency training at the University of Virginia Medical Center in 1989. Dr. Silliman completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center in 1988 and a Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine in 1992.
Dr. Silliman joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 1992 and is currently a tenured Professor of Pediatrics with a joint appointment in the Department of Surgery. He has also served as an Associate Medical Director at Bonfils Blood Center since 1998.
Dr. Silliman has received many research grants for his work, including grants from both NHLBI and NIGMS at NIH. His research interests include neutrophil-mediated cellular damage/cytotoxicity; transfusion medicine; trauma-induced multiple organ failure; pediatric hematology-oncology-bone marrow transplantation; and the role of the neutrophil in the clinical manifestations of sickle cell anemia.
Dr. Silliman is a member of many professional organizations and is on the Scientific Review Committee of the Pediatric Clinical Research Center at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. He is a reviewer for numerous medical journals, is a member of multiple study sections at NIH and reviews for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. Silliman is widely published in medical and basic science journals, as well as being a popular invited speaker worldwide. In 2007, Dr. Silliman was inducted into the National Blood Foundation Hall of Fame.
Dr. Silliman is board certified in Pediatrics and in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplantation.
