Pediatric Medical Education
Research
The Medical Education faculty have local and national grants funded for research and development in medical education. Most of these grants have focused on the development and evaluation of innovative teaching methods.
The largest of these projects is Project L.I.V.E. (Learning Through Interactive Video Education), funded for six years by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), a division of the US Department of Education. Funding was used to create a virtual collaborative learning environment (ePBL) and to disseminate the authoring tool and cases to seven other medical schools. Numerous studies to evaluate the program, individual cases and student learning have been conducted. The team is conducting the last stages of a multi-site study of this dissemination process to help them better understand what elements are most important in adopting this innovation. Project L.I.V.E. was awarded the President's Faculty Excellence Award for Advancing Teaching and Learning through Technology at UCDHSC.
The pediatric clerkship continues to be highly respected for the systematic development and evaluation of innovative teaching and assessment methods. It consistently receives the highest marks of any clerkship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Medical education faculty have begun collaborating with residents and fellows on educational research projects. We are planning a new line of educational research focusing on the newly required six educational competencies for fellows and residents. These include training and evaluation in the areas of patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, systems-based practice and practice-based learning and improvement.
