Pediatric Residency Program

How to Apply

We seek applicants who will contribute both to our program and to the future of pediatrics. We carefully review all applications to try to get a sense of each applicant as a whole person, taking into account past accomplishments, recommendations, and each potential intern’s own words. We look for qualities such as leadership, intelligence, responsibility, creativity, and caring. Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service, and we participate in the National Residency Match Program.

Information for MD/PhD Candidates

Candidates with MD/PhD degrees or PhD-like research experiences who plan research careers following residency are invited to participate in additional sessions on a Tuesday morning following the November 23rd, December 14th, or January 11th interview days. These sessions are designed to acquaint applicants with the research and fellowship opportunities on campus and give them a chance to meet several scientists in their areas of interest. These sessions are entirely optional and are not part of the evaluation process.

Information for Under-Represented Minority Applicants

Candidates from under-represented minorities are invited to informal evening gatherings hosted by our program’s Diversity in Pediatrics Committee. These events are intended to allow applicants to meet our residents and ask any questions they may have regarding relocating to Colorado and adjusting to residency. Dates for these events this year are November 19th, December 10th, and January 7th.

Information for International Medical Students

All applicants are required to have completed at least 6 months of clinical training at an accredited US or Canadian Medical Center and to meet all Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) requirements. For University of Colorado Denver-specific requirements, please see our letter to International Medical Graduate applicants. Application materials will be sent only to those candidates who meet ECFMG requirements. Please write to ECFMG-ERAS Program, 3624 Market St., Philadelphia, PA 19104-2685, U.S.A., or visit their website, to obtain the needed forms.

The Interview Day

Orientation for the interview day starts at 7:15 am with breakfast and an information session at The Children’s Hospital accompanied by housestaff, chief residents, program directors, and faculty. This is followed by two interviews with faculty, which are intended to be informational and allow applicants and faculty to get to know one another. The program will attempt to pair applicants and interviewers who have common interests. The day continues with a tour of The Children’s Hospital led by our residents followed by lunch with housestaff, allowing ample time for applicant questions regarding life as a resident.

Applicants are then transported to Denver Health Medical Center to tour the facility and meet with our chief resident, associate program director, and housestaff there. The interview day ends at Denver Health at approximately 2:30 pm, but transportation is provided back to The Children’s Hospital. For your travel plans, arrival back to Children’s will be at approximately 3:00 pm.

There is an optional Happy Hour hosted by residents on Sunday and Thursday evenings. These events offer a great chance to spend more relaxed time getting to know our residents and are highly recommended. Most applicants tell us this is one of the most important parts of their visit. Details on the location and timing of these social gatherings will be provided prior to your interview.

Diversity in Our Program

Denver and its surrounding communities boast a population covering a huge range of ethnic and socioeconomic groups. We are committed to attracting residents to our program of diverse backgrounds, both to best reflect to community we serve, and to enhance the educational experience for all residents.

Our program’s Diversity in Pediatrics Committee (DIPC), chaired by Sophia Ghebremicael PL2, meets monthly to work on fostering diversity in our program and ensuring our program graduates are prepared to meet the needs of a diverse patient population. DIPC’s active members include residents from all classes, chief residents, program administration, and faculty members.

The Department of Pediatrics funds a scholarship through DIPC for fourth-year medical students from all backgrounds interested in the care of the underserved. These scholarships help to offset the travel and housing costs involved with coming to our program for a visiting rotation, and include a weekly experience in a metro Denver clinic caring for underserved children. If you are interested in this scholarship, please download an application.

For further information or if you have questions, we encourage you to contact the Diversity in Pediatrics Committee via e-mail. Thank you!
