Pediatric Residency Program

Benefits & Events

Our residents are represented by an influential, university-wide housestaff association made up of members of each residency program, which advocates for housestaff interests. Resident stipends are comparatively generous, and they have increased substantially each year, even during the current economic downturn.

Each year, our program schedules special events throughout the year to show appreciation for the residents and to commemorate milestones. Coverage for individual class events is provided by the other classes, and coverage for program-wide events is provided by fellows and community pediatricians. Fun has always been a major part of our residency, and the sense of camaraderie among the residents and faculty is one of the most important characteristics of our program.

Stipends

2009-2010 Stipends:

PL-1: $46,451
PL-2: $49,030
PL-3: $51,770

An Educational Fund is available to each resident for reimbursement of books, meetings, or other educational materials/experiences. The amount available each year is usually $150 per resident. Additionally, if a resident has a project to present at a national meeting, the program is committed to covering the necessary expenses.

Vacation

Residents are allowed three weeks of vacation each academic year. An additional week of educational leave is permitted in the second and third years. There are several designated holidays in the pediatric program, including at least one four-day break for each resident at Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's.

Family Leave

It is the policy of the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education Committee to allow leave for maternity, paternity, adoption, illness of a close relative that requires the resident's care, or illness of the resident. Residents may be granted up to 12 calendar weeks of leave during a 12-month period for certain family and medical reasons. Leaves are granted by the Program Director. The Program Director will determine how much of the time will need to be made up in order to fulfill the specialty board certification and requirements. The complete leave policy is in the Graduate Medical Education Manual.

Paid Courses

Registration is paid for all PL-1s to be certified in PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and to recertify as required during residency.

Food

Residents are issued meal cards to cover the cost of breakfast and dinner at The Children's Hospital when on call overnight. Meal tickets are provided at Denver Health and University of Colorado Hospital when on call. Breakfast and lunch is provided at no cost to residents at the daily conferences at The Children’s Hospital.

Insurance

Medical insurance coverage is provided to residents and their family members at no cost. The health insurance plan provides basic coverage with in- and out-of-network reimbursement options and a prescription drug card program. Dental insurance premiums are paid for residents and their family members at no cost. Preventive dental services are paid at 100% and have no deductible. Life and disability insurance are provided for all residents. Malpractice coverage is provided by the program for all residents.

Computer and Library Services

Computers for resident use and education are in the resident lounge and in all clinical care areas. Free literature searches are available to all residents at The Children's Hospital and through the School of Medicine library, which each subscribe to an enormous range of journals and other electronic services for clinical use.

Membership

Resident memberships for the American Academy of Pediatrics are paid. This includes access to the AAP educational website, Pedialink (www.pedialink.org). Each year several free courses are made available to residents at this site.  Residents also receive several pediatric journals, including Pediatrics and Pediatrics in Review free of charge.

Miscellaneous

  • Text pagers are provided to all residents at no cost
  • Unlimited photocopying privileges are available in the Medical Education office
  • The resident lounge includes a kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave oven, as well as a television and computer workstations
  • Monthly fees for resident parking are paid at all institutions

Special Events

The program welcomes the new interns to Denver each year with a catered barbeque at the home of Dr. Adam Rosenberg, our program director. A reception is also held in August to allow interns to meet their new faculty mentors. The department-wide Holiday Party in December gives residents and faculty a night off to celebrate the end of the year with dinner and dancing. Weekly happy hours on Thursdays provide a welcome release and time to catch up with friends. Tuesday basketball games in the winter enjoy wide participation from our athletically-inclined residents and faculty.

Our department chair, Dr. Steve Daniels, invites the PL-1 class to dinner in the spring. The graduating PL-3s attend an informal celebration dinner in May, followed by their formal completion dinner in June at which a faculty member speaks about each graduating resident. And finally, each spring the residents and faculty gather for the infamous Skit Night, where each group tries to outdo the other with evermore involved and hilarious videos and musical performances.
