 Pediatric Residency Program
Where We Work
We feel incredibly lucky to spend our years in residency working in beautiful, modern facilities dedicated to pediatrics. Our three main training sites together offer experience in the entire spectrum of the care of children. You will care for and learn from the child with the most unusual, critical illness transported to Children’s from several states away; you will also have the unique experience of being the senior pediatrician on call for the NICU, PICU, and ward patients at Denver Health as a third-year resident. These experiences are complemented by a variety of outpatient facilities including a range of primary care clinics in Denver and throughout Colorado, as well as subspecialty clinics at Children’s.

The Children's Hospital
Founded in 1908, The Children's Hospital is the Rocky Mountain Region’s only hospital dedicated to the treatment of sick and injured children. Our new hospital, which opened in September 2007, is an amazing blend of art and state-of-the-art, where every detail was developed with the best interest of the patients and their families in mind. The hospital features private rooms for all inpatients, technologically advanced intensive care, surgery, and radiology facilities, a large conference and education center, and amazing amenities including 24-hour dining facilities, all in a spacious and beautifully-designed building. In 2008, over 11,000 patients were admitted to Children’s, and another 400,000 were treated at outpatient clinics.
Children’s referral area, which includes eight states, ensures an incredibly rich educational experience for residents, who still retain primary responsibility for all patients. Experts in every pediatric medical and surgical specialty, along with fellows in those areas, are dedicated to resident education. An advanced electronic medical record system, designed with housestaff input, helps greatly in streamlining and improving patient care.
Denver Health
Denver Health provides an invaluable educational experience that complements training at Children’s. A city hospital caring for a largely Medicaid and CHIP pediatric population, it opened its beautiful new Pavilion for Women and Children in 2006. This wing houses the hospital’s 20-bed general pediatric floor, eight-bed PICU, Level I and II NICU, and well baby nursery. Denver Health’s pediatric emergency department opened in 2008. The pediatric attendings here, all full-time faculty in the Department of Pediatrics, are renowned for their clinical teaching. Resident experience here engenders autonomy, teamwork, and a strong understanding of both common and uncommon pediatric diseases.
University of Colorado Hospital
The Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion of the University of Colorado Hospital opened in June 2007 and includes a new, 40-bed NICU and a well baby nursery, now on the same campus as The Children’s Hospital. Pediatric residents have primary responsibility for all of these infants, attending many high-risk deliveries and providing care for all newborns, from the most routine care to the most critical care.
National Jewish Health
National Jewish Health serves as an important facility for outpatient teaching and elective rotations. The Center enjoys national acclaim for its treatment programs for asthma, chronic respiratory disease, and immunologic disorders. National Jewish has been ranked the number one respiratory hospital in the country for twelve consecutive years by U.S. News and World Report. The pediatric faculty at National Jewish also provide patient care and teaching at Children's and Denver Health.
