Pediatric Residency Program
Program and Curriculum
This program involves inpatient experiences at three major
teaching hospitals: The Children's Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center and University of Colorado Hospital. Full-time faculty members in the Department of Pediatrics supervise residents at all three locations. The hospitals, located within two to three
miles of each other, actively participate in medical student
teaching as well as training residents in many specialties.
The Department of Pediatrics has approximately 378 full-time faculty and 430 volunteer clinical faculty members who are all active participants in teaching students and housestaff. We're proud to say many faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized experts in their fields. Residents work directly with attending physicians when providing patient care. Research programs take place in all sections within the Department, and experienced clinicians abound.
Our patient population encompasses a seven-state referral area,
with Denver as a regional medical center. All three hospitals care
for patients with varied cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic
backgrounds. Kaiser Permanente (the single largest HMO in
Denver) admits all its pediatric patients to The Children’s
Hospital, while community pediatricians and family practitioners
also actively support The Children’s Hospital. Medical patients are
cared for by pediatric residents, and orders are written
exclusively by pediatric residents at all three teaching
hospitals. Be assured that residents in our program are exposed
to a full spectrum of pediatric illnesses.
We have 76 pediatric residents in our program, including three chief residents. We recruit talented, committed individuals who strive toward excellence in their professional goals. In addition, we attempt to allow residents to individualize their programs toward achieving specific goals, offering over 30 elective choices, with 7 to 8 months of elective time available for each resident.
Though it varies year to year, approximately 60% of our graduating residents select clinical practice, while the remaining 40% choose subspecialty fellowship training.
