Welcome to the Children's Outcomes Research Program

The Children's Outcomes Research (COR) Program was initially authorized and funded by The Children's Hospital Research Institute (TCHRI) in 2001. Stephen Berman, MD, was appointed the first COR director. The mission of the COR Program is to contribute to an improvement of child health, both locally and nationally, by conducting state-of-the-art pediatric outcomes research that will impact clinical practice and child health policy. The goals of the Program are: 1) to develop a focused outcomes-based research agenda that builds on existing expertise and resources within The Children's Hospital (TCH) and the Department of Pediatrics; and 2) to catalyze, coordinate and facilitate high-quality outcomes research carried out by multiple TCH departments and the Department of Pediatrics sections. COR staff activities include the following: 1) education of fellows and faculty; 2) consultation about methodological and analytical issues; and 3) development of collaborative projects in the area of outcomes research.

COR closely coordinates its activities with other outcomes and health services research programs and faculty, including the Colorado Health Outcomes Program (COHO) of the University of Colorado School of Medicine; The Children's Hospital Outcomes Program directed by James K. Todd, MD; the Jules Amer Community Pediatrics Program; and the Primary Care Research Unit (PCRU), which facilitates collaboration between Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Other collaborators include the Centers for Disease Control (CDC); the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP); the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE); Kaiser Permanente; Denver Health Medical Center; a network of six private pediatric practices; The Children's Hospital; the University of Colorado Hospital; and Bright Beginnings, a statewide community-based nonprofit that serves over 15,000 Colorado families.

COHO/COR have developed expertise in three methodological areas: 1) the development and deployment of health communication tools and health information technology; 2) assessment of the design and function of health care delivery organizations; and 3) measurement of patient-centered health outcomes. Consistent with the call of the current National Institutes of Health roadmap for interdisciplinary models of research, COHO/COR projects consistently rely on collaborations among clinicians, health services researchers, behavioral scientists and statisticians.
