Welcome to Developmental Biology

The newly developed Section of Developmental Biology provides insight into the underlying causes of human birth defects and diseases through basic scientific research.

Lee Niswander, PhD, moved from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to head the Section in July 2004. The Section also includes Lori Sussel, PhD, and her research group, who were previously affiliated with the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

The current emphasis is on understanding the normal developmental processes that regulate the formation of the pancreas, limb and lung, and the spinal cord and brain. Moreover, these researchers are creating mouse models of genetic defects to determine why these developmental processes go awry in children born with birth defects (such as spina bifida) or who later develop diabetes.

The Children's Hospital Research Institute has helped to provide the foundation to launch this new Section.
