Pediatric CTRC
Education Overview

The Pediatric Clinical Translational Research Center (Pediatric CTRC) is involved in research training across multiple disciplines and levels, ranging from medical students to clinical fellows to junior faculty. Rotations available in the different Pediatric CTRC cores include:
Medical students at UCD or other institutions across the country may spend elective time on the Pediatric CTRC during which they have the option to participate in projects under a mentor.

Pediatric residents have direct contact with the Pediatric CTRC during their care of Pediatric CTRC patients while rotating on the inpatient pediatric ward service at The Children's Hospital. Additionally, pediatric residents in the Opportunities in Resident Research program may become involved in or design a research project to be completed during their residency, under the supervision of a research mentor.

NIH Career Development Awards
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers two Research Career Development Awards for investigators who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research.

Applicants from institutions having a General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) may apply to the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) for either the K23 or K24 award.

Pilot/Feasibility Program
The GCRC initiated a Pilot/Feasibility Award program in 2002 and has made awards to seven investigators. This new program supports investigators to explore the feasibility of their research ideas and collect sufficient data to apply for funding from other peer-reviewed funding sources. The program is designed to support new investigators, clinical fellows and MD or PhD postdoctoral trainees (under proper mentorship) who desire to pursue a career in clinical investigation and patient-oriented research.
