Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Center
Clinical Services

Members of the Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Center provide a wide range of clinical services:

Child Development Unit (CDU) - located at The Children's Hospital, the CDU evaluates and treats approximately 500 children and youth annually for a variety of developmental, learning and behavioral problems and is supported jointly by JFK Partners, the Department of Pediatrics and The Children's Hospital.

Developmental Research (Randal Ross, MD) - located in the Day Care Center of the Colorado Psychiatric Hospital at the Health Sciences Center 9th and Colorado Campus, the Developmental Research program is focused on early brain development and its relationship to severe mental illnesses. From pregnancy to early adolescence, this program of research endeavors to understand how the brain develops; how that development is associated with changes in how children think, feel and act; and how to use that information to develop and test new treatments. Main areas of research include children with and at risk for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism, and fragile X, Williams syndrome and Down syndrome.

Developmental Neuropsychology Clinic (Bruce Pennington, PhD) - located in the Psychology Department at the University of Denver, the Developmental Neuropsychology Clinic is part of a nationally known neuropsychology research laboratory that studies children and families who have problems with dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and autism. The clinic provides learning disability and neuropsychological evaluations for children and adolescents and learning disability evaluations for adults.

Inherited Metabolic Diseases Clinic - located at The Children's Hospital, the Inherited Metabolic Diseases (IMD) Clinic consists of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing family-focused care to children and adults with known or suspected inborn errors of metabolism. The clinic is recognized internationally for its expertise relative to diagnosis and treatment of metabolic disorders. It is the only clinic in the Rocky Mountain Region providing comprehensive metabolic services.

Medical Genetics Clinic - located at The Children's Hospital, the Medical Genetics Clinic consists of board-certified medical geneticists dedicated to providing consultation, diagnosis and treatment recommendations for patients with genetic disorders. Laboratory services include biochemical genetics, cytogenetics and molecular genetics.

UCD Biochemical Genetics Laboratory - located at the University of Colorado Denver at the Fitzsimons campus, the UCD Biochemical Genetics Laboratory was created in 1968 as part of a federally funded program to improve diagnosis and treatment of children with inborn errors of metabolism in several western states. It has been directed by Dr. Stephen Goodman since its opening, and offers tests to detect and monitor treatment of many disorders of amino acid, organic acid and fatty acid metabolism.

UCD DNA Diagnostic Laboratory - located at the University of Colorado Denver at the Fitzsimons campus, the UCD DNA Diagnostic Laboratory is a clinical molecular genetics laboratory offering full service nucleic acid-based testing. Established as a national and regional resource for the medical and genetics communities, the laboratory performs testing for a variety of genetic diseases utilizing state-of-the-art techniques.
