Welcome to The Children's Hospital Research Institute
Established in Memory of C. Henry Kempe
Research in childhood diseases formally began in 1978 at The Children's Hospital. Today, The Children's Hospital (TCH) is nationally recognized for its excellence in research in the diseases of the newborn, child, and teen.
While The Children's Hospital Research Institute (TCH RI) is affiliated with the University of Colorado Denver, our offices are centrally located at The Children's Hospital on the 2nd floor of the Administrative Pavilion.
All forms, policies and procedures, and staff contacts are located on Planet TCH (The Children's Hospital intranet) under the TCH RI departmental website. If you do not have access to Planet TCH, call the TCH RI office for assistance at 720.777.6310.
The TCH RI serves as an umbrella organization for all research at TCH. The Sponsored Programs Office in the TCH RI facilitates both pre- and post-award management of grants and contracts at TCH and develops subcontracts with outside institutions. The Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board (COMIRB) is a board established to review biomedical and behavioral research involving subjects conducted at or supported by each of the institutions. The TCH RI houses the Clinical Trials Organization (CTO), which supports TCH faculty and staff who are involved in clinical trials evaluating state-of-the-art drugs and devices for treating childhood diseases.
The TCH RI, in collaboration with the TCH Clinical Translational Research Center (TCH CTRC), supports a Biometrics Office which offers consultation services with TCH faculty and staff regarding the design of research projects, interim monitoring and the data analysis of research projects.
The TCH RI has also focused on new, young TCH investigators by funding them for projects that may subsequently provide the preliminary data necessary for the investigator to compete for funds from outside agencies. More than half of TCH RI grant recipients have been successful in obtaining additional funds from outside granting agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association, as well as other foundations and granting agencies.

Statistical Support at The Children’s Hospital:
- John Neal at the Colorado Biostatistics Consortium (CBC), Colorado School of Public Health, Building 500 (john.neal@ucdenver.edu, phone 303-724-4364, http://cbc.suchsc.edu)
For Junior Investigator awardees (K12, T32, etc.) within the Colorado Clinical Translational Science Institute (CCTSI): Statistical advice when submitting applications to the Pediatric Clinical Translational Research Center (Pediatric CTRC) and TCHRI may be obtained by e-mail and by appointment from the 4 TCHRI statisticians:
- A 5th TCHRI biostatistician should be appointed 2009, as these 4 biostatisticians are currently fully committed
- Quick questions, basic help, and short analyses can be obtained from the CBC Research Consulting Lab (RCL), Room 3132, 3rd Floor, Building 500 (phone 303-724-4619). The RCL is currently manned by graduate biostatistics MS and PhD students mostly from 8:00am to 6:00pm during the week. Their main focus is to assist students with their research projects. Please phone for an appointment as these get priority over “drop in” consultations.
- Clinical Translational Science Awards (CTSA) pilot grants are awarded periodically by the CCTSI (http://ctsa1.uchsc.edu). Statistical support will be provided for awardees. Those not funded can also apply to the TCH CTRC and/or TCHRI for statistical support.
- Please include funds for statistical support in your grant applications!
