Education Overview
The University of Colorado Denver Department of Pediatrics and The Children's Hospital Emergency Medicine Department offers a variety of educational programs, which include the following:
The Emergency Department (ED) has a core rotation in pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) for third-year medical students, in addition to a senior elective in pediatric emergency medicine, which is open to University of Colorado medical students and externs. The Emergency Department trains family medicine, emergency medicine and pediatric residents from several programs in the Denver area. The ED accepts electively-rotating residents in each of the above disciplines from around the state and around the country. All students and residents are relieved from their clinical responsibilities so they can attend the monthly case-based, open discussion PEM teaching conference. This conference is led by the pediatric emergency medicine fellow and the pediatric emergency medicine attending, with presentations by senior pediatric residents.
The University of Colorado Denver sponsors a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine through the Section of Emergency Medicine at The Children's Hospital. This pediatric subspecialty-residency-training program was accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education) in 1999 and re-accredited in 2004. For detailed information, please visit our fellowship page.
The ED has 24-hour attending physician coverage. All of our attendings are board certified or board eligible in pediatric emergency medicine. The attending staff is dedicated to bedside teaching and overall supervision geared to the level of training and the background of each of our trainees. The pediatric emergency medicine faculty is also committed to teaching in a variety of arenas, including the medical student core lecture series, the resident core lecture series, Pediatric Advanced Life Support classes and regional lecture series for emergency medicine residency training, family medicine residency training, emergency medical services personnel, as well as pediatric and emergency medicine staff physicians at other facilities. The emergency medicine faculty also welcomes other attending and staff physicians who wish to spend time in the ED in order to further their education or skills in the management of acutely ill or injured pediatric patients.
