Clinical Services

The Pediatric Oncology Program at The Children's Hospital is responsible for caring for children with oncologic conditions. Children are treated both inpatient and outpatient by the oncology faculty and staff. In addition, the patients may be followed in one of our specialty clinics of Ortho-Oncology, Neuro-Oncology and H.O.P.E. (Helping Oncology Patients Excel), a long-term follow-up clinic. The Experimental Therapeutics Program was established to promote the development, scientific support and clinical translation of promising therapies for the treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and related disorders.

The Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program at The Children's Hospital was established in September 1993. Transplants conducted to date have included sophisticated procedures, such as T-cell depleted matched unrelated donor transplants, peripheral stem cell infusions and an in utero transplant, in addition to standard allogeneic transplantation.

The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program at The Children's Hospital is a multidisciplinary team caring for brain tumor patients, including treatment of relapsed or refractory patients with high-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell rescue.

The Pediatric Hematology Program is responsible for the care of patients with primary hematologic conditions, including children with hemophilia, coagulation disorders, hemoglobinopathies and thalassemia and a variety of other hematologic disorders. A Thrombophilia Clinic was established to provide a team approach to the management of patients with thrombosis. Also established was a Bleeding Disorders Clinic for the diagnoses and treatment of bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand's disease. Major clinical components include the regional Hemophilia Center and state-funded Sickle Cell Center. The newly created Immuno-Hematology Clinic focuses on diagnosis and management of infants and children with quantitative and qualitative disorders of leukocytes, antibody-mediated destruction of red cells, white cells or platelets, recurrent infections and possible immune defects and other related disorders.

Our faculty and staff are also involved with many support programs, including the Hope Clinic (Helping Oncology Patients Excel), YAPS (Youth and Pet Survivors Program), Teen and Young Adults support program, Sickle Cell Camp, Hemophilia Camp, Butterfly Program, Wilderness Program and Robbie's Friends. These programs provide the Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation patients and their families with support through camping program events and peer interaction. The faculty and staff involvement ranges from an advisory role to staffing of the various camps.
