Infectious Diseases
Education Overview
The University of Colorado School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics and The Children's Hospital offers a three-year, ACGME-accredited (Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education) fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases. Physicians who are board eligible in pediatrics will receive at least 12 months of in-depth training in the clinical and microbiological aspects of infectious diseases. This will include inpatient consulting, infectious diseases clinic, HIV clinic and infection control. At least 21 months will be devoted to research. Upon completion of the program fellows will be eligible for subspecialty boards.
Training for residents in pediatric infectious diseases is provided through clinical consultations to the ward team and outpatient clinics. Didactic lectures are provided on a regular basis, and infectious diseases specialists are frequently present at case management conferences throughout the year. A month-long elective provides a more intensive experience as an infectious diseases consultant and a brief period in the clinical microbiology laboratory.
Training for students begins with core lectures for third-years taking the pediatric clerkship. Students at The Children's Hospital have access to the infectious diseases consultations on ward patients. An elective in pediatric infectious diseases is available for fourth-year medical students who have completed a pediatric clerkship. Students will be an integral part of the consulting team and will attend the infectious diseases and HIV clinics. They will also have a structured exposure to the clinical microbiology laboratory and the infection control service.
