Child Neurology
Residency
The University of Colorado School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics and The Children's Hospital offers a three-year residency in Child Neurology. The goal of the program is to provide physicians who are board eligible in pediatrics with in-depth training in child neurology that will prepare them for a career in clinical or academic medicine.
Child neurology residency
candidates
will only be considered
for acceptance
if the applicant has completed either: two years of general pediatric residency, or one year of pediatric residency and one year of internal medicine residency, or one year of pediatric residency and one year of approved basic neuroscience research training in an area relevant to child neurology. These requirements comply with those of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for certification in child neurology. For further information, please see our Criteria for Acceptance document, which is provided as an Adobe PDF file.*
Child neurology residency training programs are required to accept applicants through the San Francisco Matching Program (SFMP) or "early match". Applicants must apply to the SFMP. Applicants must apply separately for pediatric residency training. Child Neurology positions not filled through the match will be available in accordance with SFMP guidelines; inquiries should be directed to the program director.
Child neurology residents spend 12 months of the first year of training on the adult neurology service to acquire basic clinical examination and diagnostic skills. Each resident is also assigned a weekly child neurology continuity clinic for the entire three-year residency. During the second and third years of training, the child neurology resident will rotate through the child neurology inpatient-consultation service at TCH and will also have the opportunity to gain additional experience in neuropathology, electroencephalography, neuromuscular disease, neurosurgery,
genetics, metabolic disorders, child development
and other related subspecialties. At the end of the training program, each child neurology resident will have spent twelve months on the adult neurology clinical service, twelve months on the child neurology clinical service and twelve months on a combination of other clinical, laboratory and basic science rotations. Program details can be found in our Training Manual. Further information on the adult neurology training program can be obtained at www.uchsc.edu/sm/neuro/training_residency.htm
Fellowship Programs
Clinical and research fellowships are available in
several
neurological subspecialty areas.
A one-year clinical fellowship in pediatric epilepsy has recently been approved. The fellowship can be expanded to a second research year. Year two is dependent on outside funding.
Fellowships in movement disorders and pediatric stroke are currently being developed. Residents also have the ability to complete mini-fellowships in epilepsy, movement disorders and pediatric stroke in the last six months of residency training. If you have questions, please contact the residency coordinator (see below).
