Child Neurology
Education Overview
The Section of Child Neurology has a strong commitment to educating and training the next generation of child neurologists. Faculty teach and mentor fellows, residents, and medical students.
The three-year, ACGME-accredited residency program in child neurology provides academic, clinical, and research experiences to residents with previous pediatric training (two years minimum). The goal of the program is to train physicians in child neurology and prepare them for careers in clinical or academic medicine.
Clinical and research fellowships are available in several neurological subspecialty areas. A one-year clinical fellowship in pediatric epilepsy is currently available, and fellowships in movement disorders and pediatric stroke are being developed.
The Section of Child Neurology supports the neurology education to pediatric and psychiatry residents through elective rotations in the section and works with the School of Medicine to provide experiences in pediatric neurology to third- and fourth-year medical students. Pediatric neurology is an integral component of the pediatric clerkship curriculum for third-year medical students at UCDSOM. The faculty provides a lecture in pediatric neurology as part of the clerkship's core lecture series. An elective in pediatric neurology is available for fourth-year medical students who have successfully completed a pediatric clerkship.
Training for pediatric residents in child neurology involves intensive clinical training in all aspects of clinical pediatric neurology as well as opportunities for development of clinical and/ or translational science research skills.
