Pulmonology
Education Overview
Our section is dedicated to educating health professionals at all levels of training in pediatric pulmonology. We offer a three-year Fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology, as well as month-long rotations for pediatric residents and medical students.
A Sleep Medicine Fellowship is available through a combined program at National Jewish Health and The Children’s Hospital Sleep Center. The Fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology has been partially supported over the last decade by Dr. Abman's training grant from the NIH and by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Dr. Jeff Wagener is Director of the Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Program.
Dr. Robin Deterding is the Associate Dean for Clinical Curriculum at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and has recently led the medical school-wide effort to revamp the curriculum.
All faculty members are involved in the day-to-day education of pediatric pulmonology fellows and pediatric residents at the University of Colorado Denver. These activities take the form of teaching on the ward, in the clinic, and in the research laboratory. Dr. Steve Abman is the principal investigator of the NIH pediatric pulmonology training grant and Dr. Frank Accurso coordinates numerous Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fellowships. Research opportunities are available throughout the School of Medicine and at National Jewish Health. We are very proud of the outstanding training our fellows receive, with most fellows pursuing a career in academic pediatrics following graduation.
Our faculty are broadly involved in resident and fellow education. All faculty members of the pediatric pulmonary section attend on the inpatient pulmonary service. One of the resident ward service attendings is always from the Section of Pulmonology.
Faculty members give numerous lectures and conferences for the residents throughout the year. Additionally, residents rotate through the Section as an elective during their residency training. Evaluations from residents have consistently been excellent. Of note, almost every pulmonology faculty member has received recognition for teaching from housestaff or students.
Members of the Section participate in teaching medical students on the pulmonology inpatient service as well as in the outpatient clinics. Fourth-year medical students can take a fourth-year elective on the pediatric pulmonology service.
