Scatterbed Research Nurse Clinical Coordinators
Not all children who are going to participate in clinical research studies
can come to us. Some are not able to walk, or are too ill or who may
be contagious to others, or are attached to special medical equipment
that cannot be moved. So we have specialized nurses who bring the research
to the study subjects wherever they are located
within the hospital - and are thus sometimes referred to as "scatterbed
nurses."
Scatterbed nurses are fully qualified research nurses, but in addition
they contribute extra time and effort to carry out studies in the following
ways:
- Assist in the design of research studies for hospitalized patients
- Identify and recruit potential research subjects
- Coordinate research into clinical patient care
- Create tools (flowsheets/spreadsheets) for carrying out studies
- Obtain informed consent from parents to enroll their child in research
- Go to patient rooms within the hospital to conduct research activities
- Collect and process research samples
- Collect, record and report on patient data
- Provide staff, parents and patients education related to research
studies
- Facilitate communication between CTRC staff, investigators and parents
