SURF Eligibility Information

SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program for Underrepresented Populations will introduce undergraduate students from diverse, disadvantaged and traditionally underrepresented groups to graduate/career opportunities at the University of Colorado Denver.

Purpose:
Research students will participate in a 10-week summer research program. The students will be asked to select a mentor. During the summer program, the students will be required to attend a weekly seminar and will be required to give a presentation of their research findings at the end of the 10-week program.

Eligibility:
Research students are selected on the basis of academic achievement and interest in a basic science research career. Successful applicants will have completed at least one year of college and demonstrated both interest and aptitude in laboratory/basic sciences. Accepted students must complete the entire ten weeks. Other requirements include:

  1. Minimum overall GPA of 2.9 and science GPA of 3.0
  2. Two letters of recommendation (one must be from a science faculty member)
  3. A personal statement of interest in graduate education, particularly in the field of Pharmacology
  4. A current transcript.
  5. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident

Stipend and Health Insurance:
Students will receive a $3200 stipend/living allowance for the 10-week program. Students will be responsible for room and board, but the Department of Pharmacology staff will be available to help identify summer accommodations. Accepted students will receive the first half of the stipend at the end of June and the remainder of the stipend at the end of the program. Participants in the program are not covered by health insurance, but are covered by workers’ compensation insurance.

Transportation:
Students will receive up to $300 for relocation costs to participate in the program.
