I have been with Angie literally since the day she came here. Her lab
was brand new and everything was still in boxes the day I came to
interview with her. It was great getting in on the "ground floor" to
help organize and set up the lab the way I wanted to. Angie has been
incredibly supportive of me and my work and I have had several
projects of my own in the lab. My current main project involves the
cloning and sequencing of a Xenopus calcium channel. Calcium channel
studies are a new addition to the lab but soon will add to our quest
for learning about early nervous system development and the
acquisition of electrical excitability. Another project I have been
involved with is the cloning and sequencing of Xenopus potassium
channel Beta subunits. Beta subunits have been shown to modulate the
functional properties of potassium channels, so naturally our lab
would be interested in studies of these Beta subunits. Along with my
science projects (as with all PRA's) I am also responsible for
"running" the lab by ordering, stocking, lab maintenance, animal
care, etc. That in itself is nearly a full time job! But I truly love
my work and all the great experience I am getting. And the plus of it
all is being able to work with all the wonderful people I have known
over the years. I think that the Physiology department is like one
big happy family and I am thankful to be a part of it all.
