Dr. Meschia's research interest is in placental and fetal physiology. He and his collaborators currently study pregnant ewes which are equipped with maternal arterial, uterine venous, fetal arterial, umbilical venous and fetal hepatic venous catheters for sampling purposes, and additional fetal and maternal intravascular catheters for the infusion of blood flow indicators and metabolic tracers. Studies are focused on placental transport and metabolism of amino acids and on the metabolic interactions between placenta and fetal liver. These studies explore changes associated with parturition and fetal growth retardation. Dr. Meschia's laboratory is in a satellite research facility of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. It is a separate building which is located on the grounds of Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. Technical staff working in this facility are an essential component of the research effort.
