The University of Colorado Department of Psychiatry (formerly, Colorado Psychiatric Hospital) has a very long and rich tradition on Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry dating back to 1934 when Dr. Ed Billings developed the first Psychiatric Liaison Division for a Department of Psychiatry in the country. Dr. Billings discovered that the involvement of psychiatrists in the care of medical/surgical patients decreased their requirement for analgesic medication and shortened their length of stay – well before the advent of managed care. Areas of interest of the CL faculty include: traumatic brain injury, neuropsychiatry, solid organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, HIV infection, pulmonary medicine, substance abuse, primary care medicine, sexual dysfunction as a result of illness/injury, obstetrics and gynecology, and burns.
To request a consult, inpatient services call our administrative assistant at 303-315-9070 and provide the following information: requesting physicians name and pager number, attendings name, patients name, medical record number, location, and reason for consultation. A resident or attending will make telephone contact to begin the consultation. Patients are seen within 24 hours of the request. Urgent consultations can be given higher priority. The psychiatric assessment will include a complete psychiatric history, mental status examination, diagnosis and recommendations. Common consultations include: capacity evaluations, assessment of suicidality, psychiatric complaints and relation to primary medical condition—including psychosis/delirium and depression.
