DNA Extraction for Colorado Subjects with Autism
Project Abstract
The University of Colorado Denver is collaborating with the University of Utah in a project searching for susceptibility genes for autism using linkage studies of autism. Researchers have noticed that a child born into a family with autism has a greater chance of having autism then a child born into a family without autism. This suggests that genetics plays a large part of the development of autism.
We are looking for families who have one or more family members with autism (at least 3.5 years of age).
If you agree to take part in this study, we will ask you and your family members to: First, complete questionnaires about your medical history, health history, family medical history, pregnancy history, developmental history and diagnostic testing results.
Second, we will ask you to make a one-time visit to The Children’s Hospital for a one-time blood draw. Each family member will be compensated for his or her time.
Major Goals
- Finding the genes linked to autism will help us learn more about the biological systems influenced by these genes and help us in the development of new treatments and interventions.
- This new study will enable us to contribute to a better understanding of the genetic and environmental factors involved in autism spectrum disorders.
