Psychiatry Scholars Program Requirements
Once a mentor/mentee relationship has been established, the student must complete the Psychiatry Scholarship Plan. The Scholarship Plan is written in conjunction with and signed by the preceptor, and submitted, and approved before work on the project can begin. While the Psychiatry Scholarship Plan must be submitted by mid-Phase III, submission by the end of Phase II is encouraged.
Completion of the scholarship project generally requires at least 300 hours but may vary depending on mentor and project chosen. This can either occur as two half days each week for 40 weeks, or one half day per week for 80 weeks or full-time for a contiguous 8 weeks (e.g between Phase I and Phase II or for two contiguous months during Phase IV).
The Scholarship Project may take several forms depending on the individual project. Approved formats include:
Research Paper – Students will complete a double-spaced, typewritten report of at least 10 pages, describing the results of the student’s research project, to be signed by their preceptor and submitted at the end of the fellowship. The format of the paper shall generally be similar to published research (e.g. Abstract/Introduction/Methods/Results/Conclusions/Bibliography).
Poster – Students may present their findings in poster format at the annual Psychiatry Poster Session. The format of the poster shall generally be similar to nationally presented poster (e.g. Abstract/Introduction/Methods/Results/Conclusions/Bibliography).
New curricula – New curricula in a variety of formats are possible, including web-based instruction, syllabi, and Power-Point presentations. However, all new curricula submissions must be accompanied by a double-spaced, typewritten report of at least 4 pages, including an Abstract, Goals (specific aims), intended audience, background and significance, data collection process, method of instituting the curriculum change, and a bibliography.
Reviews of Educational Programs – must include a focus on a specific issue related to educating the public, patients, students, or physicians. This review must be a minimum of 6 typed pages, double-spaced, and should include an Abstract; an identification of an issue being review; the population the educational program is designed for; the data source, type, and means of collating the data employed; suggested solutions, and the means by which the suggested solutions were evaluated for possible effectiveness (e.g. focus groups, contact with and/or feedback from the group the education program is designed for, etc), conclusions, and a bibliography.
Program Review – A Program Review must include a specific, well-defined focus on a specific issue. This review must be a minimum of 6 typed pages, double-spaced, and should include an Abstract; an identification of the issue being addressed; the population the health care system is designed for; the data source, type, and means of collating the data employed; suggested solutions, and the means by which the suggested solutions were evaluated for possible effectiveness (e.g. focus groups, contact with and/or feedback from the group the education program is designed for, etc), conclusions, and a bibliography.
Community Health – A review of a specific issue in Community Health must include a focus on a specific issue related to community health. This review must be a minimum of 6 typed pages, double-spaced, and should include an Abstract; an identification of an issue being review; the population the community health program is for; the data source, type, and means of collating the data employed; results; conclusions, and a bibliography.

This review must be a minimum of 6 typed pages, double-spaced.
The formats may be modified under the direction of the mentor to reflect the specific needs of the scholarship project; however, the proposed format should be submitted to and approved by the PSP prior to final submission of the paper (preferably as part of the Scholarship Plan).
The research paper must contain the following statement at the end of the paper, signed by the faculty mentor “I believe that, with the submission of this paper, this student has met the Behavioral Medicine Scholarship requirements, including time spent on this scholarship project as well as the appropriate completion of this manuscript [signature of mentor and date].
All reports should be delivered to the Department of Psychiatry’s Medical Education Office.
Students may be asked to complete additional scholarship products as defined by the School of Medicine for the Capstone Course.
Additional Requirements – Students may be asked to complete additional requirements (pre- and post-tests, module assessments, etc.).
