Addiction Psychiatry Residency

Training Director Dr. Carol Traut with the 2009-10 Addiction Fellows |
The University of Colorado Denver Department of Psychiatry initiated a PGY-V Addiction Psychiatry Residency in July of 1995. This residency is designed to train board eligible psychiatrists in the field of Addiction Psychiatry and particularly to provide the clinical and didactic experience required for Subspecialty Certification in Addiction Psychiatry. The program was site visited by the Psychiatry Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in September of 1995 and was among the first four addiction psychiatry programs to receive ACGME accreditation for 12 months training. It was revisited and re-accredited in 1998 and again in 2002. Since the year 2000, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology has required completion of an accredited PGY-V addiction psychiatry residency for eligibility to sit for the Subspecialty Certification Examination in Addiction Psychiatry.
Colorado’s Department of Psychiatry houses one of the nation's oldest clinical training programs in psychiatry as well as child and forensic psychiatry training programs. Currently, the department has three positions accredited for twelve months of clinical training for PGY-V addiction residents. Residents have an option of spreading the clinical training over two years at 50% time and having 50% time for research, contingent upon obtaining research funding.
For Current Stipend levels, please refer to GME's stipend page . Completion of the PGY-IV year in an accredited psychiatric residency is a prerequisite. The University benefit package for house officers includes health, life and disability insurance, professional liability coverage, and health insurance for spouses and dependents. The program does not involve night call.
