Department of Psychiatry

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Residency

Eligibility Requirements | Selection Criteria | Application Process

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are accepted from graduates of MD and DO programs, and from graduates of equivalent international medical programs.

An internship and two years of general psychiatry are the basic requirements for application. Additionally, residents are required to hold a valid Colorado medical license. Upon formal acceptance to the program, application for licensure must be initiated so that residents are licensed as they begin the program.

To ensure that the process for selecting residents is consistent with guidelines established by the ACGME, Graduate Medical Education Committee, University of Colorado Denver and compliant with appropriate Federal and State statutes and regulations, this program has the following eligibility requirements.

  1. Applicants must document compliance with one of the following:
    1. graduate from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school;
    2. graduate from an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited college of osteopathic medicine; or
    3. be a foreign medical graduate holding a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate; or hold a full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction; or successfully complete a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
  2. Applicants must successfully pass a criminal background investigation (criteria specified in UCD and GMEC background investigation policies).
  3. The CU School of Medicine recognizes that residents enrolled in its programs are trainees, not employees. As such, all applicants also must be able to meet conditions of the institutional houseofficer (resident) training agreement. Specifically, individuals must meet one of the following requirements:
    1. be a U.S. citizen; or
    2. b. hold a valid U.S. resident alien card; or
    3. possess (or be eligible to possess) all of the following:
      1. valid passport;
      2. valid 1-94 card (obtained upon entry to the U.S.) that indicates D/S J-1 (Duration of Status for J-1 Visa); and
      3. J-1 Visa sponsorship from the ECFMG to train at the CU medical school in the specific training program.

Selection Criteria

A Resident Selection Committee in each departmental training program evaluates all eligible applicants. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their preparedness and experience; academic credentials; ability and aptitude; communication and interpersonal skills; and on personal qualities such as integrity, learning motivation, and work ethic.

University of Colorado Denver (UCD) prohibit discrimination based upon race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, creed, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status in admission and access to, and treatment and employment in educational programs and activities of the UCD.

Supporting information, including graduate school transcripts and letters should be requested by the applicant. One of the three letters of recommendation must be from the applicant’s Department of Medicine (or primary care) Clerkship Director.

Because there are differences in training centers, and the individual applicant’s personal goals for training, it is essential that each applicant visit the center in order to see the facilities, meet some of the facility members, sit in on a seminar if possible, and have a chance to meet informally with a few of the current residents in order to get their views of the program. These activities and interviews can be accomplished in a single, very busy day, but we recommend that the applicant arrange to be here for the entire day if travel plans permit. Due to the large number of applications we receive, we are unable to interview everyone. The Selection Committee will review your application file, and we will let you know if interviews are to be scheduled. Your application will not be considered unless you complete the interview process.

DEADLINES: The dates by which we must receive your completed application and for scheduling your interview change from year to year; please contact the Training Office at (303) 724-6021 for current deadlines.
