Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Residency

Rotations

Our curriculum covers two years in which the first year clinical and didactic experiences addresses essential skills and the second year allows the resident to use the block of elective time to gain intensive experiences in specific clinical, administrative and/or research areas.

Year I - Clinical Experiences

The Intensive patient experience involves supervised experiences in which the resident functions as the primary clinician and team member for the treatment of children and/or their families. Group, individual and family therapies are practiced in these settings. Several affiliate institutions are utilized for this experience.

Inpatient/Outpatient Consultation Liaison

First year residents rotation at TCH for a 3 month rotation encompassing general pediatric specialty pediatric service, adolescent medicine outpatient clinic, developmental disabilities day hospital consultation liaison experiences.

Year II Clinical Experiences

Second year residents continue in the outpatient psychiatry continuity clinic experience. In addition residents rotate through additional consultation liaison experiences focusing on systems based practice consultation. Residents also participate in the TCH Pediatric neurology clinic. Finally 15 – 18 hours are devoted to an individualized elective experience designed with a primary faculty mentor to foster advanced knowledge and skill in, research, clinical expertise and administrative/teaching arenas.

Systems Based Practice -Consultation Liaison

  1. This is a required rotation for second year child and adolescent psychiatry residents. Residents spend approximately 6-8 hours/week, on average for a 2 month rotation, consulting to the Colorado University Affiliated Program, JFK Clinic, in Developmental Disabilities on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

  2. The school team, school system consultation liaison experience is a required rotation for second year child and adolescent psychiatry residents. This is a 2 month rotation, running concurrently with the public school year, and occurring in elementary and middle schools in the Denver Public School system.

  3. All residents spend two days a month providing C/L services, team consultation and direct clinical consultation to mental health professionals in a community mental health setting. This is a 12 month rotation in which the residents provide child and adolescent psychiatric consultation to community mental health centers both in the metropolitan Denver/Denver Suburban areas, and in the outlying parts of the state of Colorado. Several clinics offer telemedicine experiences.
