Irving Harris Program in Child Development
and Infant Mental Health

Position Information and Application Procedures

One-year training positions are available to applicants with different levels of experience and with different time commitments, as follows:

Postdoctoral Fellowships for Psychologists and Child Psychiatrists

In addition to a demonstrated interest in infancy and early childhood, applicants must have a PhD or PsyD in clinical psychology and have completed an APA-accredited internship, or an MD and have completed a residency in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Minorities and bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply (must be a U.S. citizen) since most of the fellow clinical site placements are bilingual settings. Although most of the trainees in the program are full-time, occasionally arrangements may be made to pursue training on a part-time basis. Selected candidates for fellowship positions must complete all degree requirements prior to starting fellowship. Postdoctoral fellows receive a stipend plus benefits and paid leave during their training.

Recruitment for the postdoctoral fellowship positions starts January 1st and continues until the positions have been filled. If you are interested in applying for a fellowship position, please submit the following by December 31st (see contact information below):

  • Letter of interest (please include why you are interested in the Harris Program, what are your training goals, and what you would like to be doing professionally 5 years from now)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Application form
  • Three reference letters per instructions on application form

Your materials will be reviewed and considered for the training positions that will start the following September. Attempts are made to match an applicant’s areas of interest to the program's clinical sites. Applicants meeting our initial requirements will be invited for in-person interviews, which will be held in late January/early February. Interviews are held over 2 full days (Thursday and Friday) and entail visiting the clinical sites as well as meeting with Harris Program directors/faculty, clinical site supervisors, and current fellows.

Mid-career Training for Master’s-level Mental Health, Social Work, Early Childhood Education Professionals, and Allied Health Professionals

This track is for individuals who are seeking training in infant mental health while continuing in their current position and participating in the Harris Program on a part-time basis. Mid-career applicants must have at least 5 years prior experience working professionally with young children. Mid-career fellows need to commit to 1 day (Tuesday) a week to attend seminars and individual supervision as well as maintain an adequate clinical caseload of direct service with young children and their families to support supervision and case discussion in the didactic seminars. Mid-career applicants who work in agencies will also need a commitment of appropriate “release time” from their agency duties to participate in the fellowship experience.

Mid-career training positions are negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Dr. Karen Frankel directly by May 1st (303-724-3725 or Karen.Frankel@ucdenver.edu) for more specific information on mid-career training and contract arrangements. If you meet our initial requirements, discussions about clinical case requirements, your agency’s commitment to having you pursue the training, and the financial arrangements to pay for the training and administrative costs will start. You will also be invited to submit a complete application (letter of interest, application form, curriculum vitae/resumé, and three recommendation letters) for consideration of a position for the following fall.

Submit all application materials (preferably by email) and correspondence to:
