Closure of Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at University of Colorado Hospital
Announced
The University of Colorado Hospital announced on September 30, 2008, that its 20-bed inpatient psychiatry unit will close in early January 2009.
This decision was not unexpected and follows a national trend of decreasing numbers of inpatient psychiatry beds. The psychiatry residency has ample resources for high-quality inpatient psychiatry training at Denver Health Medical Center, the Denver VA, and The Children’s Hospital. UCH will continue to host rotations in outpatient, consultation-liaison, and addiction psychiatry.
UCH’s decision will in no way adversely affect the psychiatry residency or the associated faculty. The Colorado psychiatry residency, like many nationally, has recently been shifting clinical rotations from inpatient units to other settings, reflecting a change in prevailing practice patterns, the development of new treatment settings and modalities, and the decrease in the timed requirement for inpatient psychiatry in the ACGME accreditation standards.
Residency applicants with questions about the UCH inpatient psychiatry service are welcome to contact Alexis A. Giese, MD, Program Director and Vice Chair for Graduate Medical Education.
