Current & Ongoing Research Support

Title: Bupropion for ADHD in Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders
The primary aims of this study are: 1) To assess the safety and efficacy of bupropion versus placebo in treating ADHD in adolescents with SUD; 2) To assess the safety and efficacy of bupropion versus placebo in reducing nicotine use in adolescents with ADHD and SUD. Secondary Aims: 3) To evaluate the impact of bupropion versus placebo on non-nicotine drug use (including cannabis); 4) To evaluate the impact of bupropion versus placebo on depressive symptoms in the subsample who meet DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD).

Educational Activities

Medical Students:
Tutor, Big Six Substance Abuse Problems in Primary Care Medicine (Psych 8001). This is a 2 – 4 week full-time elective course for 3rd and 4th year medical students. It aims to introduce students to the detection, evaluation, and treatment of the most important substance issues in primary care medicine. Tutors are members of the Division of Substance Dependence and community practitioners.

Psychiatric Residents:
Course Director, Adolescent Substance Use Disorders and Co-Occurring Disorders; Child, Adolescent Residency Training Program, UCD. 1996- present.

Course Director, Development 1; General Psychiatry Residency Training Program, UCD. 1996-2006.

Lecturer, Introduction to Substance Dependence for PGY III Residents. This course meets for 1 hr / week for 10 weeks each year. Teachers are faculty in the Division of Substance Dependence and community practitioners. Scheduled Lectures in 2007.

Mentoring:
Dr. Riggs also serves as the Principal Investigator of the NIDA/ AACAP K 12 Physician Scientist Career Development Program currently offering research training to five Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists establishing independent addiction research careers.

Dr. Riggs serves as an elective research mentor to Residents in the Department of Psychiatry, UCD and to Post-Doctoral Fellows through the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group (DPRG) research fellowship.

Mentor, Psychiatry Scholars Program, Division Faculty serve as mentors to medical students wishing to fulfill their independent learning requirement.

Opportunities for Research Participation of Medical Students and Residents:
Medical Students: In the Division’s research elective, Psychiatry 8610, or Psychiatry Scholars Program, students will work on projects currently pursued by Division faculty, or in associated labs on the CU-Boulder campus.

Residents and Post-Doctoral Fellows: Dr. Riggs serves as an elective research mentor to Residents in the Department of Psychiatry, UCD and to Post-Doctoral Fellows through the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group (DPRG) research fellowship.
