Current & Ongoing Research Support

Title: Synergy Assertive Continuing Care: Using ACC/ACRA as an Aftercare Model
This grant will provide aftercare services utilizing the ACC/ACRA model to 144 substance-abusing youth leaving either residential or day treatment.

Title: Differential Response to Evidence Based Treatment
The major goals of this longitudinal project are to identify factors associated with children’s differential response to an empirically validated treatment designed to reduce serious youth antisocial behavior and delivered in community settings.

Completed Research Support

Title: Multisystemic Therapy as a Residential Aftercare Model This grant enhanced our residential treatment program for 135 youth by using Multisystemic Therapy (MST) plus CRA beginning one month prior to an adolescent’s discharge from residential treatment and continuing for a period of three to four months post-discharge.

Educational Activities

Medical Students:
Tutor, The Big 6 Substance Abuse Problems in Primary Care Medicine (Psych 8001). This is a 2 – 4 week full-time elective course for 3rd and 4th year medical students. It aims to introduce students to the detection, evaluation, and treatment of the most important substance issues in primary care medicine. Tutors are members of the Division of Substance Dependence and community practitioners.

Psychiatric Residents:
Child Psychiatry Residents and Addictions Fellows may take a course I teach “Adolescent Substance Use Disorders and Comorbidity.”

Lecturer, Introduction to Substance Dependence for PGY III Residents. This course meets for 1 hr / week for 10 weeks a year. Teachers are faculty in the Division of Substance Dependence and community practitioners. Scheduled Lectures in 2007.

Mentoring:
Addictions Fellows participate in a rotation at the Synergy Outpatient Clinic.

Pre-doctoral psychology internship students may take a research or clinical minor rotation under my guidance – www.uchsc.edu/sm/psych/divpsy/synergy.htm.

Mentor, Psychiatry Scholars Program, Division Faculty serve as mentors to medical students wishing to fulfill their independent learning requirement.

Opportunities for Research Participation of Medical Students and Residents:
Medical Students: In the Division’s research elective, Psychiatry 8610 or Psychiatry Scholars Program, students will work on projects currently pursued by Division faculty, or in associated labs on the CU-Boulder campus.
