DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • Sleep Apnea Therapy

My recent research has focused on CPAP efficacy in the management of sleep apnea. Interestingly, our initial research demonstrated that although OSA is very common and almost universally treated with CPAP, the majority of patients have poor compliance (approximately 4.5 hours per night of use) and therefore are likely to be exposed to the cardiovascular abnormalities associated with untreated apnea. Future studies will be aimed at determining what is the impact of suboptimal therapy and whether or not individuals are at risk for the development of hypertension, myocardial infarction, and stroke. This area of interest may be even more important in the future as the full impact of untreated apnea on our society is revealed.
