What We've Accomplished
In the past fifteen years, Division scientists and physicians have made great strides in the understanding and treatment of lung diseases and critical care illnesses. New treatments have been tested and developed for cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, acute lung injury, sepsis, and tuberculosis. More therapies are on the horizon. The Division's Lung Transplant Center (which has performed more than 3400 transplants since its inception in 1992) has the best survival statistics of any program in the country.
In addition to the Division's remarkable advances in the research and treatment of lung disease and critical care illness, more then twelve percent of all academic pulmonary physicians in the U.S. have been trained in its program (there are currently 170 pulmonary programs in the United States). Eighty-five percent of the physicians trained in the Division opt for careers in academic medicine and scientific investigation. More than 20% of the "Best Pulmonary Doctors in America" have their roots in CU's Pulmonary and Critical Care Division.
The Lung & Critical Care Research Fund
In 1992, patients, faculty and friends of the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine established the Lung & Critical Care Research Fund (formerly the Lung Research Endowment Fund). The sole mission of the Fund is to support research designed to conquer death and disability caused by lung diseases and critical care illness. Efforts to secure monies for The Lung & Critical Care Research Fund are overseen by a Board of Directors.
The growth of The Lung & Critical Care Research Fund is dependent upon monies raised through generous donations by caring faculty, patients and friends of the Division. This fund applies its money to endowed chairs. To date we have established four chairs. Two chairs have been in relation to a patient family and a friend of the division. They are: The Hart Family Endowed Chair for Emphysema Research and The James C. Campbell Endowed Chair for Pulmonary Medicine. We have also established two endowed chairs to honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the Division: the Roger Mitchell Endowed Chair for Lung and Critical Care and The Thomas L. Petty Chair for Pulmonary Research. We are presently raising funds for the Marvin I. Schwarz Chair in Pulmonary Medicine. As with our other endowments, all monies raised are used to support research efforts.
Volunteer Opportunities
The gift of your time, talent or in-kind donation to events benefiting The Lung & Critical Care Research Fund (affiliated with UCD Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine) will mean more effective treatments - and even cures for lung disease and critical illness.
We are always seeking generous individuals and companies to donate their time, talent and in-kind generous gifts to help make our fundraising events successful.
The fundraising agenda changes from year to year, as do the time and talent requirements. If you are interested in helping one of these ways, please contact: UCD, Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine, 4200 E. 9th Ave, Box C272, Denver CO 80262 or call the pulmonary office at (303) 315-4211.
Special Tribute Gifts
