“Energy expenditure and body weight regulation”
Energy expenditure will be discussed in the context of long term energy homeostasis. The impact of changes in expenditure on energy balance and compensatory changes in food intake will be presented. Perspectives on the importance of understanding the regulation of energy expenditure in relation the maintenance of a healthy body weight will be relayed.
Moderator- Robert Eckel*, M.D.

“Fuel preference and body weight regulation”
The importance of fuel metabolism in body weight regulation is controversial in that the impact of fuel preference is linked to energy balance. There is some debate as to how changes in the oxidation of CHO, fat, and protein can impact the regulation of body weight. The importance of substrate utilization in body weight regulation will, therefore, be discussed, and placed in context among other metabolic factors that are important for the maintenance of a healthy body weight.
Moderator- James Hill*, Ph.D.
