Abdominal Imaging Fellowship
The Department of Radiology at the University of Colorado Denver offers a Fellowship in Abdominal Imaging that includes a broad
spectrum of diagnostic ultrasound, body computed tomography and body magnetic resonance imaging
with optional rotation in abdominal fluoroscopy. The department provides imaging services for a large renal and
kidney transplant program, as well as a large oncology program.
Fellows rotate through the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion (AOP) and the
Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion (AIP), a 380-bed hospital.
The Radiology Department is fully digital with PACS integration between inpatient and outpatient environments.
Presently, the Ultrasound section consists of 4 exam rooms in the
AOP, 4 exam rooms in AIP, one exam room in the AIP ED, and 4 shared rooms in the AOP with
Prenatal Diagnosis. The equipment is predominantly high-end Philips iU-22 systems. The spectrum of exams includes general abdominal, OB/GYN,
arterial and venous vascular, kidney transplant, liver transplant, neck, testicular and
neonatal brain. Procedures include ultrasound-guided neck biopsies. About 2,500
ultrasound exams are performed each month.
Our CT complement includes Philips 40 slice and 64 slice units in the AIP and Siemens 16 slice and 64 slice units in the AOP. The 40 slice unit in the AIP will be upgraded to a 64 slice unit in the near future. The spectrum of exams includes general abdomen-pelvis CT,
chest-abdomen-pelvis cancer monitoring, CTA, and pre-transplant and post-transplant evaluations
(mostly liver and kidney). About 1,700
body CT exams are performed each month.
The MRI facilities include two Siemens 1.5 Tesla magnets at the AOP and
one GE 3 Tesla magnet at the AIP. An additional Philips 1.5 Tesla magnet for the AIP is expected in the near future, as well as a new Philips 3 Tesla magnet for an outpatient imaging facility at Colorado Center. We perform approximately 200 body MRI exams per month, including liver, renal, pelvis, MRA, and cardiovascular studies. The department supports a large renal and liver transplant service.
Since the program focus is on abdominal imaging, some GI and GU
fluoroscopy may be included in the fellowship program.
The clinical experience is distributed between ultrasound and CT/MRI
rotations. The fellowship includes a four-week elective in another Radiology specialty with
prior approval. Fellows may attend, as time permits, a broad spectrum of department conferences.
Fellows will be expected to prepare and give conferences throughout the course of the year
and to participate in resident and medical student education. There are opportunities
to participate in on-going research projects that may result in scientific publications.
The program is non-ACGME and does not participate in the National Resident Matching Program.
Each fellow must have a general Colorado State Medical License prior to beginning the fellowship.
Each fellow will be appointed at the instructor level. On-call duty may be as frequent as 1-in-3.
Independent clinical radiology service to the department may average up to one day per week.
Salary is competitive. Benefits include 15 days of vacation and 5 days of meeting time.
