Abdominal Imaging Fellowship
The Department of Radiology at the University of Colorado at
Denver and Health Sciences Center offers a Fellowship in Body Imaging that includes a broad
spectrum of diagnostic ultrasound, body computed tomography, body magnetic resonance imaging
and abdominal fluoroscopy. The department provides imaging services for a large renal and
kidney transplant program, as well as a large oncology program.
Fellows rotate through the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion (AOP) and the
Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion (AIP), a 380-bed hospital, has opened adjacent to the AOP.
The Radiology Department is fully digital; the PACS integrate imaging services between and
inpatient and outpatient environments.
Presently, the Ultrasound section consists of 4 exam rooms in the
AOP, 4 exam rooms in AIP, one exam room in the AIP ED, and 4 shared rooms in the AOP
Prenatal Diagnosis. The equipment is predominantly high-end ATL-Philips systems; there
are presently two GE 4-D systems. The spectrum of exams includes general abdominal, OB/GYN,
arterial and venous vascular, kidney transplant, liver transplant, neck, testicular and
neonatal brain. Procedures include ultrasound-guided biopsies and drainages. About 2,500
ultrasound exams are performed each month.
Presently, there is one 40 slice CT unit at the AIP and three CT units
at AOP including a 40-slice cardiac unit. An additional CT unit will be added to the AIP in
the near future. The CT complement includes three multi-slice systems and one single-slice
CT-fluoroscopy unit for procedures. The spectrum of exams includes general abdomen-pelvis CT,
chest-abdomen-pelvis cancer monitoring, CTA, and pre-transplant and post-transplant evaluations
(mostly liver and kidney). Procedures include CT-guided biopsies and drainages. About 1,000
body CT exams are performed each month.
Presently, the MRI facilities include two 1.5 Tesla magnets at the AOP and
one 3.0 Tesla magnet at the AIP. A substantial portion of the MRI experience includes
pre-transplant and post-transplant evaluations (mostly liver and kidney). Other exams
include renal, prostate, pelvis, MRCP and MRA. About 70 body MRI exams are performed
each month.
Since the program focus is on Abdominal Imaging, some GI and GU
fluoroscopy may be included in the fellowship program.
The clinical experience is distributed between ultrasound and CT/MRI
rotations. The fellowship includes a four-week elective in another Radiology specialty with
prior approval. Fellows may attend, as time permits, a broad spectrum of department conferences.
Fellows will be expected to prepare and give conferences throughout the course of the year
and to participate in resident and medical student education. There are opportunities
to participate in on-going research projects that may result in scientific publications.
The program is non-ACGME and does not participate in the National Resident Matching Program.
Each fellow must have a general Colorado State Medical License prior to beginning the fellowship.
Each fellow will be appointed at the instructor level. On-call duty may be as frequent as 1-in-3.
Independent clinical radiology service to the department may average up to one day per week.
Salary is competitive. Benefits include 15 days of vacation and 5 days of meeting time.
Please note that a shared Women's Imaging fellowship
position is offered by the Breast Imaging section and the Body
Imaging Division. This includes six months of breast imaging and
procedures and six months of body imaging (US, CT, MRI) including
high risk OB ultrasound. Specific information detailing the Women's
Imaging fellowship is available here.
