Women's Imaging Fellowship
The Department of Radiology at the University of Colorado
Health Sciences Center offers a one-year fellowship in Women's Imaging.
The fellowship consists of six months of Breast Imaging and six months of Abdominal Imaging,
with the fellow typically rotating between the two services in 2-month blocks.
The Breast Imaging months provide extensive experience in
full-field digital mammography, film screen mammography, breast ultrasound,
ultrasound-guided and stereotactic core biopsy and needle localization, ductography
and breast MRI, with more than 10,000 screening, diagnostic and interventional
breast imaging studies performed each year. All studies are performed on-site at
the University of Colorado Breast Center, a comprehensive Breast Center jointly
operated by Radiology, Surgery and Medicine on the University’s new Anschutz / Fitzsimmons
Health Sciences Campus. This multidisciplinary approach facilitates interaction between
the breast imagers, breast surgeons, and oncologists, all of whom contribute to the
fellow’s educational experience. Presentation of cases at weekly multi disciplinary
breast conference is an integral part of the fellowship experience. The breast imaging
faculty are well-respected, highly trained physicians.
The experience during the months on Body Imaging is identical to that of the
Body Imaging fellows and includes general ultrasound, body CT and MRI, and Prenatal Diagnosis/OB
ultrasound. Specific information detailing the Body
Imaging fellowship is available here.
Abominal Imaging Fellowship Information
The Department of Radiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center offers a Fellowship in Abdominal Imaging that includes all aspects of diagnostic ultrasound,
body computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Fellows rotate through Anschutz
In-Patient Hospital and the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion, the site of our outpatient clinics
and services. We have a fully digital department with a McKesson PACS system and voice
recognition for dictation.
The faculty is a team of well-respected, highly trained physicians.
There are seven body imagers at University Hospital.
The University Ultrasound Division consists of four examining rooms
in the hospital and four exam rooms in our outpatient facility, with an additional four
rooms in prenatal diagnosis. We have eight real-time units, all with pulsed Doppler,
color flow Doppler and power Doppler. Approximately 1,000 ultrasound examinations are
performed each month with 40% OB/Gyn (including high-risk obstetrical ultrasound), 40%
general abdominal and 20% vascular cases.
There is one 40 slice Philips CT scanner in the Anschutz In-Patient
Pavilion, with a second 64 slice scanner being ordered. There is one 40 slice Philips
scanner and 1 each 16 slice and 4 slice Siemens scanner in the Out-Patient Pavilion.
The 4 slice Siemens will be replaced with a 64 slice CT scanner. Approximately 500 body
CT cases are performed per month. Increasing numbers of interventional procedures are
performed each week using CT or ultrasound guidance.
The In-Patient Pavilion MRI facility has a GE Signa 3 T unit, with
the intent to purchase a second 3 T magnet. There are two Siemens 1.5 T magnets at the
outpatient pavilion. We perform approximately 200 body MRIs a month, including liver,
renal, pelvis, MRAs, and cardiovascular studies. The department supports a large renal
and liver transplant service.
In addition to clinical and teaching responsibilities, there is the
opportunity for Fellows to become involved in research projects that will result in
scientific publications. There are numerous ongoing clinical research activities with
strong medical physics support in ultrasound, CT and MRI from the Division of Radiological
Sciences.
Please note that a shared Women's Imaging fellowship position is offered by the Breast
Imaging section and the Body Imaging Division. This includes six months of Breast Imaging
and procedures and six months of Body Imaging (US, CT, MRI) including high risk OB ultrasound.
