Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship
Welcome!
Thank you for your interest in the MSK fellowship at the University of Colorado Denver.
My name is Brian Petersen, Director of Musculoskeletal Radiology. I did my residency here at
the University of Colorado and was inspired to pursue a career in MSK radiology by Dr. BJ Manaster,
who directed the section during the years I was a resident. I did my MSK Radiology Fellowship at the
University of Wisconsin. I ventured into private practice for a couple of years before I realized that
I belonged back at the University of Colorado. The MSK section is small, but growing, consisting of myself
and Dr. James Borgstede. Dr. Borgstede has most recently been the president of the ACR and remains
entrenched and active in supporting and protecting Radiology as a specialty. We share his MRI expertise
with the Body Imaging section and he also serves as the Vice Chairman for the Department of Radiology.
We are proud to welcome a new faculty, Dr. Richard Oh, in the summer of 2008 after he completes his
fellowship training at University of Rochester Medical Center.
What can we offer you?
We endeavor to provide a fellowship training experience that is fun, stimulating,
and well-rounded. When you leave Colorado (if you leave!) you will have had training in all
aspects of MSK imaging: Radiography, CT, MRI, focused MSK Ultrasound, and all manner of MSK
interventional procedures. We are striving to build our procedural service to encompass the
expertise of our staff. This includes arthrography, therapeutic and diagnostic joint injection,
spinal injection to include cervical, thoracic and lumbar epidurals, selective nerve root blocks
and facet injections, discography, bone and soft tissue biopsy, fractureplasty, and RF and cryoablation
of primary and metastatic bone tumors.
We work closely with the Departments of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation. One of our MSK
radiology reading rooms is embedded in the Orthopaedic Clinic to facilitate this strong working relationship.
Clinical conferences are a must to effectively train in MSK radiology and we offer our imaging expertise at
regularly scheduled multi-disciplinary conferences.
With our diverse exposure to all facets of MSK radiology, research projects are abundant. We can encourage
you and facilitate your own project or you can participate in ongoing research.
Living in Colorado
It won’t take long for you to figure out why Colorado is one of the most desirable places in the country to live. Beautiful
weather all year around, world class skiing, biking, climbing, and hiking make it an outdoor dream. You can’t
swing a 5 iron in Denver without hitting one of the many fantastic golf courses in and around the Denver area.
You hit the ball farther at altitude! Denver offers the culture of a major city with art, entertainment and
food for all tastes. Come experience the magic of the Mountain West.
