The University of Colorado Hospital

The University of Colorado Hospital is a new 400+; bed tertiary-care hospital on the Anschutz Medical Campus. It became fully operational in June 2007. The new medical campus is home to the Anschutz Outpatient Pavillion, the Anschutz Cancer Center, The Rocky Mountain Eye Institute and the University of Colorado Medical School. The hospital and clinics serve both the local community and referrals from throughout the Rocky Mountain region. As a result, they refer patients with diverse and often advanced types of pathology to the Radiology Department.

The new Radiology Department is state-of-the-art and has four 16-64 multidetector CT scanners, two 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners, one 3 Tesla MRI scanner, digital mammography, four interventional radiology suites and several multipurpose rooms. There is an additional 3 Tesla MRI scanner for research located on the Anschutz campus. The faculty of the Radiology Department is comprised of fellowship trained experts in all the radiological subspecialties. The combination of the diverse and advanced pathology of the patient population and the expertise of the faculty provide an ideal learning atmosphere for the radiology residents. Slightly more than half of the residents' experience is in this academic environment.

A large portion of the residency program educational activities takes place at the Anschutz campus. The core curriculum lecture series are usually presented on this campus. In addition, our Proven Case Conference, a conference where a resident and attending radiologist are shown a pathologically proven case together, is held every week. The campus also hosts daily noon conferences which are usually "hot-seat" conferences. Residents may also participate in numerous tumor board meetings and other subspecialty multidisciplinary conferences.

Denver Health Medical Center

Denver Health Medical Center is a 500 bed Level 1 Trauma Center and safety net hospital for the City and County of Denver. It is a primary teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Colorado, Denver School of Medicine. All Denver Health attending physicians hold University of Colorado faculty appointments. Radiology residents in the University of Colorado Program rotate through services at Denver Health throughout their training, spending a total of approximately one year there. DH faculty place a strong emphasis on resident education, which is their primary academic focus.

Residents at DH learn a great deal about all imaging manifestations of trauma. They see relatively advanced manifestations of many diseases in patients from medically underserved populations. They also see a broad spectrum of imaging pathology as they rotate through 8 imaging services (some services are combined for educational reasons, with approximately 50% of the experience in each): Neuroradiology, Body CT (Thoracic, Abdomen/Pelvic, and Musculoskeletal), Fluoroscopy/MRI, Ultrasound/Pediatric Radiology, Breast Imaging/Nuclear Medicine, Interventional Radiology, Emergency Radiology (afternoon OD), Emergency Radiology (night float).

The Childrens Hospital

The Childrens Hospital (TCH) is a 275 bed multi-specialty pediatric referral center and teaching hospital covering a seven state region. The main hospital is part of a non-profit pediatric healthcare network with 13 satellite clinics in the Denver metro area with over 1,000 pediatric physician specialists. Newly built in 2007 on the Fitzsimmons campus in Aurora, Colorado, TCH is a state of the art hospital.

Radiology residents in the University of Colorado Program spend a total of 3 months at TCH with training in pediatric radiography, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, US, nuclear medicine (including PET-CT) and interventional radiology. There is exposure to a broad spectrum of pathology from basic pediatric medicine in busy emergency departments and clinics to complex congenital and developmental malformations There are active neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, general surgery, oncology, orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, pulmonary, infectious disease, gastroenterology, urology, and metabolic/genetics departments. TCH faculty pediatric radiologists place strong emphasis on resident education with a resident lecture curriculum (2+ lectures per week), core lecture series, daily rounds with NICU and PICU teams and many interdepartmental conferences.

National Jewish Hospital

National Jewish Health is an affiliated institution of UCD. It specializes in respiratory, cardiac and rheumatologic diseases, and has been identified as the nation's #1 hospital for respiratory disorders by US News and World Report for the past 11 years.

National Jewish Hospital has a brand new radiology department, staffed by 6 experienced cardiothoracic radiologists, comprising Siemens Dual Source and 128-detector CT scanners, Siemens Avanto MR scanners, and Siemens Biograph PET-CT scanner. Residents rotating through NJH will encounter a unique variety of cardiac and pulmonary diseases, imaged on high-quality equipment. Multiple interdisciplinary conferences provide an outstanding learning experience.

Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center (DVAMC)

The DVAMC Imaging service provides a wide spectrum of imaging modalities to include plain film, U/S, CT, MRI, IR, as well as Nuclear Medicine. 12 full-time attending physicians review 125,000 examinations/annum. 4 residents typically support the service. The residents rotate through Body CT and MSK MRI, as well as IR, Neuroradiology, Fluoroscopy, U/S and Nuclear Medicine. In addition to scheduled UH sponsored conferences at noon M-Fri, VA Attendings offer additional subspecialty review sessions 3 days/week. The DVAMC participates in an extensive Teleradiology program in support of the Department of Defense, the VA facility in Sheridan, Wyoming, as well as several community-based clinics located in Southern Colorado. The DVAMC is the primary referral center for the Rocky Mountain region.
