Research Interests:
Based at the VA Medical Center, Dr. Wierman's basic research interests
are in the regulation of the genes that control the reproductive
axis. She studies those mechanisms by which gonadal sex steroids
and peptide hormones regulate the expression of the gonadotropin
releasing hormone (GnRH). Dr. Wierman has cloned the rat GnRH gene
and is investigating the mechanisms which control developmental
and tissue specific expression of GnRH in neuronal cells. The major
goal of her work is to define the mechanisms by which GnRH gene
transcription is controlled in order to gain a deeper understanding
of the pubertal process, infertility, and hypogonadism.
