Location Executive Committee, Rocky Mountain Prevention Research Center Julie Marshall, Ph.D. Director Julie Marshall received a B.S. in Microbiology from Colorado State University, an M.S. in Public Health from the University of Hawaii as an East-West Center Scholar involved in cross-cultural studies and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology (1987) at the University of Washington. Julie has been a co-investigator on the San Luis Valley Diabetes Study since its inception in 1981. She has published articles on diet and risk of type 2 diabetes, indicators of nutritional risk in the elderly, how genetic variation modifies the relation between diet and blood cholesterol, and on analytic methods. She is an Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at UCD where she teaches epidemiological methods. Julie is the Principal Investigator on SIP-22, a CDC-funded grant, “Nutrition, activity and health in the San Luis Valley.” Julie is interested in understanding environmental and social factors that influence people’s daily choices regarding diet and physical activity and how the public health system can better work with communities to promote healthy lifestyles.
Elaine Belansky, Ph.D. Associate Director Elaine Belansky is a social psychologist. She earned her Ph.D.(1994) at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her graduate work focused on a variety of topics including women and stigma, gender roles, successful adolescent development, and the transition from adolescence to early adulthood. Elaine has published articles in the areas of gender roles and helping as well as in adolescent development. She is interested in interventions that directly lead to successful childhood outcomes, and particularly the role that peers, family, schools, neighborhoods, and community play in developing physically and psychologically healthy children. Prior to coming to the PRC, Elaine worked at the Center for Health Services Research (www.uchsc.edu/chsr ) on projects related to health care services for the geriatric population.
Lori Crane, Ph.D. Evaluation Core Director Lori Crane received her B.A. in pharmacology; her M.P.H. (1983) and Ph.D. degrees (1991) were done at UCLA, where she was trained in the design and evaluation of public health programs. Lori has published articles in survey research, tobacco use, cervical and breast cancer screening interventions, skin cancer prevention, and social support. She is an Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at the UCD, and teaches Master’s level courses in program evaluation, questionnaire design, and the social/behavioral influences on health. Her current research includes studies on skin cancer prevention and the prevention of tobacco use in youth. She has a strong interest in the delivery of disease prevention education through medical offices.
Reginaldo Garcia, Ph.D. SLV Program Director Reginaldo received his Ph.D. (1985) in clinical psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He also studied at the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences in Houston, Texas. Dr. Garcia has worked as a clinical and consulting psychologist in private and public settings in Denver, Houston and the San Luis Valley. He served on the Colorado State Board of Psychologist Examiners. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and past president of the Society for Descriptive Psychology. Dr. Garcia was director of the Southwest Region Migrant Education Program at the San Luis Valley BOCES. He served as president of the Colorado Association of Educational Specialists. Dr. Garcia did graduate research on personality and alcoholism treatment and served on several research teams. He was the psychologist for the Colorado part of a 5-state study on depression in primary care settings conducted by the RAND Corporation. He and his colleagues did internal studies on curriculum development and learning outcomes as part of continuous quality improvement in classroom instruction and student achievement which they presented at state and national conferences. Dr. Garcia is interested in research that addresses the total person, communities and organizations, health care practices, consumer education and training, and public policy in advancing healthy living and preventing chronic illness.
