The Institute of Medicine convened a recent meeting of the Immunization Safety
Review Committee to study the possible causal relationship between inoculations
that contain low levels of ethylmercury and adverse neurological consequences.
According to the FDA, infants younger than 6 months may accumulate the compound
at unsafe levels. Preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention suggest a weak correlation between exposure to ethylmercury in
vaccines and the incidence of neurological problems such as ADHD and autism.
However, the American Academy of Pediatrics, in a joint statement with the
U.S. Public Health Service, emphasized that the risk of not vaccinating children
far exceed the potential problems of ethylmercury exposure. Almost all pediatric
vaccines are available in versions that do not contain the compound. The complete
