From 1949 to 1996, enormous steps have been made in improving the health
of children. In 1949, there were 1018.8 deaths per 100,000 infants. In 1996,
there were only 26.3 deaths. Birth defects went from 443.9 per 100,000 to
36.8. Accidents decreased from 234.7 to 15.2 per 100,000 children under the
age of five. Viral polio, which killed 3,145 children and teenagers in 1952,
has been all but eliminated. However, social problems, including sexual and
physical abuse, suicide, and homicide have been driving childhood mortality
in recent years.
