A recent study of 132 children with food allergies found that
18 percent of the children had an allergic reaction at school in the previous
two years. Fifteen percent of the children did not have a physician's orders
for treatment or medication. The author of the study, Dr. Nowak-Wegrzyn of
the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, stated that up to 25 percent of first
allergic reactions occur in schools. Her recommendation is that parents consult
with their physicians for emergency plans and medications, and that schools
develop procedures to make epinephrine immediately available. The article
was published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Visit
