Last year, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new prolonged action drug for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While many medications for ADHD must be administered several times daily by a school health professional, the new drug can be taken in the morning before a child leaves for school. Provided the twelve hour tablets are effective, a major interruption in students' time for learning will be eliminated. This advance could add up to one additional week per school year of learning time for students who need this medication. At present, these students lose up to twenty minutes per day visiting the school health room for their medications. Between 4 and 12 percent of school-age children, or 2.5 million, mostly boys, are believed to have ADHD.
