Over 1,000 of the nation's 53 million students will be killed or injured
in automobile accidents during before and after school hours. Statistics show
that school buses are the safest mode of transportation. Approximately half
of U.S. elementary and secondary school students ride in school buses. The
other half ride bicycles, walk, use public transportation, or ride in passenger
vehicles. 81 percent of the students killed in all modes of travel during
school transportation hours were killed in passenger vehicles. The vast majority
of those killed were between the ages of 16 and 18. The fatality rate for
school bus occupants is more than 7 times lower than for automobiles.
