While adult athletes can improve muscle mass with protein, active children need more carbohydrates and liquids. The American Dietetic Association's sports nutrition division recommends carbohydrates for 50 to 55 percent of an active child's diet, with 10 to 15 percent for protein and 25 to 30 percent for fat. Children also dehydrate much more quickly than adults, and need five to nine ounces of water or a sports drink every twenty minutes. www.eatright.org/pr/press061496.html
