Wendy Shugol, special education teacher in Fairfax County, Virginia, suffers
from cerebral palsy, a weakened immune system, diabetes, asthma, and respiratory
infections. She teachs her students with disabilities utilizing a combination
of toughness and empathy, because she believes that they will have to push
themselves toward independence in the world. She has been awarded the Frieda
J. Riley Award, which is given to one special education teacher in the United
States who excels over hardship. The award includes $5,000 and a reception
at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum.
