A recent study found that 18 percent of teenage girls aged 15 to 19 who provided
self-collected samples had undetected sexually transmitted diseases. The two-year
study involved over 200 female students at school-based health centers in
two Pittsburgh area high schools. Diseases identified included trichomoniasis,
chlamydia, and gonorrhea. The author of the study stated that, "The study
is significant because it shows that a self-testing option can be very valuable
in detecting previously undiagnosed STDs in an adolescent population."
Untreated STDs can cause infertility, pregnancy complications, heart valve
inflammation, and other long-term health problems.
