The International Health Opportunities Group (formerly IHOPP, now known as Students for Global Health, or SGH) is a student run organization that was formed by Patrick Diaz, Lisa Dillabaugh, Liz Withers and our faculty advisor Julie Paranka, MD. The group shares a passion for travel, medicine, and the plight of underserved patient populations throughout the world. Recognizing that exposure to international medicine is an extremely valuable experience for any person interested in health care overseas, the group was started in the summer of 2002 with the purpose of consolidating international health opportunities onto one website so that students could more easily access information regarding opportunities abroad. It was also created so that students interested in international health could plan lectures on campus and share in exciting opportunities overseas.

The mission of SGH (Students for Global Health) is to increase student awareness and engagement in global health. In pursuit of this mission, SGH organizes global health electives, arranges a lecture series that informs students of international health opportunities, and maintains a freely available database of international travel opportunities for health science students. In recognition of the diverse nature of global health needs, SGH is an interdisciplinary organization that aims to involve students from all fields of the health sciences in SGH activities and opportunities.
